"Opium"
was originally called "Miserable", and then "Into
a dew" ("O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt/
Thaw and resolve itself into a dew!" [Hamlet, i.2.131-32]).
These titles refer to the depressing quality of the music. Steven
even fell asleep while mixing the Omer's Odyssey version,
so he finally decided to honor the narcoleptic qualities of the
song by calling it "Opium." This song has recently evolved
into a tribute to the city of Dresden, which was firebombed during
World War II. You'll understand when you see the video. The interesting
history of this song began when Steven tried to copy the style
of Rufus Wainwright and failed, producing instead the most depressing
song in the Sculpted Static canon. |
